Sip on This: The Rise of Cannabis-Infused Beverages

by Rolling Stone Culture Council / Cannabis

Cannabis-infused beverages are no longer just a trend—they’ve become a full-blown movement. This market is rewriting the rules of both the cannabis and beverage industries, fueled by a demand for something new, bold, and healthier.

As consumers move away from smoking and toward discreet, sophisticated consumption methods, these drinks lead the charge, offering a balance of innovation and wellness.

Think of it this way: the world isn’t just looking for healthier options; they’re craving newer experiences. And with the cannabis drink market expected to explode from $2.04 billion in 2023 to a staggering $117.05 billion by 2032, it’s clear that this is more than just a niche. From CBD-infused sparkling waters to THC seltzers, this market is taking off—and it’s just getting started.

The Evolution of Cannabis Beverages: Why Now?

The industry’s meteoric rise can be attributed to shifting consumer preferences and growing legalization efforts across North America. As more states in the U.S. and countries like Canada embrace legal cannabis for both recreational and medicinal use, buyers are looking for new ways to consume cannabis that don’t involve smoking or vaping.

Enter cannabis-infused beverages—discreet and sometimes lower in THC content, making them an option for both seasoned users and newcomers alike.

That said, clear trends are indicating that consumers are also seeking drinks that deliver a potent cannabis experience, similar to the demand for high-THC strains in the traditional cannabis market.

For example, Uncle Arnies initially entered the market under the guidance of Ave Miller, aligning with the popular mocktail trend. However, their sales data soon told a different story. After shifting focus to high-potency products, Uncle Arnies experienced a massive quarterly sales boom, with their high-THC beverages accounting for the majority of sales.

A key driver of this industry’s growth is the health-conscious consumer. Cannabis drinks offer an appealing alternative to alcohol, especially as more individuals prioritize wellness and mindfulness in their daily routines—and hoping to avoid a miserable hangover.

Some of these beverages were created to allow consumers to enjoy a gentle, controlled experience without the intoxicating effects associated with traditional cannabis products.

Major Players Driving Innovation

The market has attracted major industry players, leading to unprecedented innovation and product development. Canopy Growth, one of the biggest names in the cannabis space, has introduced several cannabis-infused beverages under its Tweed and Quatreau brands, offering everything from THC-infused sparkling water to CBD-infused tonics.

Similarly, Molson Coors has partnered with HEXO Corp to form Truss Beverage Co., which produces a variety of cannabis drinks tailored for recreational and wellness-focused consumers.

Keef Brands has made a name for itself with flavorful, THC-infused sodas available in a range of potencies to suit different preferences. Meanwhile, Pabst Labs entered the market with its Pabst Blue Ribbon Cannabis-Infused Seltzer, combining a beloved legacy brand with the cannabis revolution.

CANN, a microdose THC beverage company, has attracted notable investors, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Casey Neistat, and Tove Lo. These strategic partnerships signal a major step for cannabis in the mainstream.

These companies are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with cannabis beverages, leading to a diverse market full of options that cater to different lifestyles and consumption habits.

A Healthier Alternative: The Wellness Appeal

As consumers become more health-conscious, many are looking for ways to incorporate cannabis into their routines without the harmful effects of smoking or excessive alcohol consumption.

Cannabis beverages are an option that fits into this wellness narrative, offering benefits such as relaxation, stress relief, and even potential therapeutic advantages for conditions like anxiety and chronic pain.

Cannabis beverages, particularly those infused with CBD, appeal to those seeking the health benefits of cannabis without the high. Drinks like Veryvell by HEXO Corp, which offers a line of low-calorie, sugar-free, and gluten-free CBD sparkling waters, are becoming increasingly popular among wellness-focused individuals.

Regional Growth & Market Potential

North America, particularly the U.S. and Canada, leads the charge in cannabis beverage sales, but other regions are catching up. Europe is experiencing a growing demand, particularly in countries like Germany, where cannabis products are legal for medical use.

Similarly, the Asia-Pacific region is expected to see significant growth as awareness of cannabis’ health benefits continues to spread.

The Future of Cannabis Beverages: A Market Ready to Disrupt

The cannabis-infused beverage market is more than just a passing trend—it’s an emerging industry set to disrupt both the cannabis and beverage sectors. As regulatory frameworks evolve and more countries move towards legalization, we can expect even more innovation and growth in this space. According to market analysts, cannabis beverages are expected to grow at a CAGR of 18% over the next decade, highlighting the tremendous potential for established players and new entrants.

The rise of cannabis-infused beverages signals not only a shift in consumer preferences but a broader movement toward wellness, innovation, and the exploration of alternative experiences. The future of cannabis beverages looks bright—and it’s only just getting started.
