GiveDirectly
GiveDirectly has revolutionized philanthropy by focusing on direct cash transfers, giving low-income individuals the autonomy to address their most pressing needs.
By bypassing traditional aid models, the organization ensures that 90% of every dollar reaches recipients. Studies show that cash transfers reduce poverty more effectively than many traditional aid methods, with recipients experiencing sustained increases in income and well-being.
Since 2009, GiveDirectly has distributed over $800 million in direct cash transfers to more than 1.6 million individuals living in poverty. Programs currently operate across ten countries, including Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Morocco, Rwanda, Uganda, and the United States.
The program is funded by individual donors, foundations, institutions, and businesses such as Google, Canva, and USAID.
Develop for Good
Develop for Good was founded by a few Stanford computer science students in the spring of 2020 when COVID-19 struck.
They connect students with nonprofits to develop technical products while gaining real-world experience. Partnering with Silicon Valley tech companies, the organization provides mentorship and prioritizes access for underserved and underrepresented students in tech.
By advancing digital equity and fostering diverse tech leadership, Develop for Good empowers students to learn through social impact projects, accelerating their careers and driving the digital transformation of the nonprofit sector.
Volunteers from Develop for Good, including students and mentors, have already collaborated on over 200 websites, applications, and data projects for nonprofit organizations supporting diverse causes.
Some of their notable projects include:
- Literacy & Education: Redesigned Readeezy Literacy’s mobile platform to bring a library for struggling readers to smartphones; built a career hub for underserved Filipino students with KadaKareer; and centralized data for Pratham Books to further their mission of providing books to children.
- Climate & Sustainability: Designed features for Collaction’s climate action app and used machine learning with Falling Fruit to predict plant ripeness for foraging.
- Community Support: Built a marketplace for refugee-owned businesses with Jumpstart Refugee Talent, enhanced NeighborShare’s data reporting system, and improved website usability for Solutions in Hometown Connections.
- Healthcare & Therapy: Designed tools for pediatric cancer support with Roc Solid Foundation and created a web app to monitor horse stress levels for Maryland Therapeutic Riding.
The Ocean Cleanup
Ocean plastic pollution is a critical environmental crisis, affecting nearly 900 marine species. Economically, it incurs annual costs of $6-19 billion, impacting tourism, fisheries, aquaculture, and cleanup efforts. Additionally, it poses health risks by introducing toxic pollutants into the food chain, ultimately affecting humans.
This nonprofit aims to rid the world’s oceans of plastic. The Ocean Cleanup has already removed over 4 million pounds of plastic waste from waterways and oceans using innovative systems like autonomous interceptors and massive floating barriers. Their scalable technology offers hope for cleaner oceans by 2040.
Recognized by Forbes 30 Under 30, Fast Company, United Nations Champion of the Earth, and Entrepreneur Magazine, The Ocean Cleanup aims to “put ourselves out of business once the oceans are clean.”
Code for America
Code for America harnesses technology to make government services more accessible and equitable. In 2024, their focus on expanding digital equity promises even greater systemic change.
Code for America focuses on several critical areas to drive systemic change:
- Social Safety Net: Collaborating with federal and state agencies, they work to transform the delivery of public benefits, ensuring that essential services like food assistance and healthcare are accessible to those in need.
- Criminal Justice Reform: The organization partners with communities and governments to develop technology and policies that reduce barriers within the criminal legal system, thereby improving access to employment, housing, and education for affected individuals.
- Tax Benefits: By creating user-friendly digital tools, Code for America assists eligible individuals in accessing tax credits and benefits, promoting economic justice and financial stability.
- Civic Engagement: Through initiatives like the Brigade Network, they mobilize a national network of volunteers to work on local projects that enhance government transparency and community involvement.
Code for America employs a human-centered design methodology, focusing on users' needs—particularly those from vulnerable communities—to create effective and equitable solutions. Their collaborative approach involves working directly with government entities to build digital tools, reform policies, and improve program delivery.
The FarmLink Project
The Farmlink Project is a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to mitigating food waste and alleviating food insecurity by connecting farm surplus produce to food banks nationwide.
Founded in April 2020 by college students, the organization emerged in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted supply chains and heightened food insecurity. By bridging the gap between excess food and communities in need, Farmlink addresses both environmental and social challenges.
Since its inception, The Farmlink Project has made significant strides:
- Food Rescued: Over 250 million pounds of surplus food have been redirected to communities nationwide.
- Environmental Benefits: By diverting produce from landfills, the organization has mitigated more than 240,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions.
- Community Reach: To combat food insecurity, collaborations with over 120 farms and more than 300 communities have been established.
